I’ve been spending the week in Myrtle Beach at my parents’ house.
Being your own boss can be pretty cool sometimes. And I do really love the freedom that having my own business gives me.
To be fair – I was a teacher before so technically I’d be on summer vaycay anyways, but still…
I think the freedom is why most of us start our businesses, right? Is that true for you too? 🤷♀️
You start off mostly just wanting to make your own hours, not have a jerk principal (oh wait… that’s me), and do work that makes you happy. Maybe there’s more to it, but that pretty much covers it for me.
Then after you read enough sales pages you start falling for all the myths…
Myth #1: The dream of passive income
The idea that I could be chillin’ with my kids at the beach and still see those Stripe notifications rolling in is a good one. And yes – technically it’s possible – but there are layers to that onion. And it’s not really realistic for most of us, or as easy as they make it sound.
And for the record – most of my income is service-based – so it’s anything but passive. I just scheduled an email for a client from my mom’s dining room table – so…. 🤷♀️
Myth #2: If I’m working really hard I must be doing something wrong
Ask most entrepreneurs outside of this weird “online business” bubble we’re in and they’ll tell you that starting your own business isn’t for the faint of heart. But when you keep hearing other people talking about how easy it is for them, it starts to feel like you’re doing something wrong if you’re working. 🤔
Myth #3: If it’s not growing super fast, it’s not going to work
Sales pages don’t just promise us that it’ll be easy and we’ll make money while we sleep – they’re also bold enough to claim that it can happen incredibly fast too! Then when it’s taking time for you to grow your email list, or your YouTube channel you’re left feeling like there’s something wrong with you. Which couldn’t be further from the truth. 💔
I’ve been hosting Pop Up Networking Parties, and they have been really fun ways to connect with new people in a way that feels friendly and actually builds deeper connections.
Wanna debunk the myth of all networking parties feeling super awkward and weird? Come join these parties instead!
I’d love to see ya there! 🥳
