When Kathleen Oh was deleted from Instagram, with no customer service to call, and no one to help her recover the account, she was scared and hurt. As creators, we often think that it is a mutualistic relationship between us and algorithms, but the truth is everyone on social media can disappear from the platform in a second, and if you have built your business on these platforms that can be a scary thing! (Just think of the great March 2024 social media outage that had influencers shaking for a few hours😶🌫️)
So here’s the deal, Kathleen and I dive into all of the ways that you can have a badass business sans social media! The setback pushed Kathleen to transition to Substack, a platform that offered creative freedom and a supportive community without the pressures of Meta looking over her shoulder. Kathleen prioritized her mental health and started focusing more on personal connections over financial gains. Her experience highlights the toll that social media trends and algorithms can take on mental well-being and the relief in finding a platform where she can engage with readers on her own terms.
Whether you’re thinking of starting a Substack, launching a podcast, hosting your summit, or starting a membership, you’re gonna need fresh branding! When Kathleen was ready to go all in on Substack, I created a logo, chose colors and fonts created all the different size graphics she needed for that specific platform, and started creating one-of-a-kind graphics for each of her posts.
