Positive Affirmations for Freaks and Geeks

Affirmations are great for when you sometimes need a lil’ boost when it comes to your mental attitude or your outlook! I mean, we all do! If you don’t I’d love to know your secret!

Today I’m chattin it up with my girl Sam Krage-Yamada. She’s a body positivity coach and the co-owner of Big Sky Designs Co, an awesome sticker company with her BFF Ellie.

They have all kinds of sticker designs from body positive to 80’s movie lines. We’re talking today about how stickers can also be used to infuse positive affirmations into your everyday life.

What is an Affirmation?

Affirmations are basically little sayings that you tell yourself in order to re-program your brain. It can be as simple or as complex as you want. I had them up when I was in labor with my first born.

They said things like, “Your body was made for this.” or “You got this!” or something like that. To be honest, I can’t remember what they said, I had my eyes closed for most of it.

It’s basically reminding yourself of something in the hopes of literally reprogramming your brain to believe things that are true about yourself that you might currently not be that great at remembering.

Sam has a sticker that has four girls on it. And it says, “You’re perfect at any size.” And unfortunately that is not the message that our society has sent us. So that’s something that Sam and Ellie are trying to combat with that particular sticker.

What’s so great about Affirmations?

The thing I really like about Sam and Ellie’s stickers as affirmations is that they incorporate a little bit of sass and humor, which is more my style. It makes the affirmations feel less “cheesy” and more approachable to me.

The thing is, we tell ourselves messages all day long. All day your mind is saying things to you. Some are good, and some are bad. The idea is that when you surround yourself with positive affirmations you can start to reprogram those bad ones into good ones.

It takes time, but with cute ones you can hang around your house it’s a lot easier to keep reminding yourself of the good thoughts!

Affirmations: How Do We Use Them?

It can be as simple as jotting something down on a post-it and putting it up on your bathroom mirror. But it could also be as simple as getting a cute download (spoiler alert: Sam made ya one) and printing it out and hanging it where you’ll see it often.

Sam mentions that she has a sticker on her phone so that she can see it every time she picks up her phone. You gotta sprinkle them around your world so that you see them often.

There is one more step though…you have to consciously read them. Say them to yourself. And really take it to heart for it to work it’s magic. Admittedly, I still struggle with this step, but it can be done!

Your next step:

Go grab the download from Sam, print it out and hang it up! Then maybe once that sinks in a little, start to think about specific things you might need to reprogram in your brain and get to changin!
